Mickelson still unsure when he will return following surgery

Phil Mickelson

Phil Mickelson has had to undergo surgery on a sports hernia for the second time in just three months, leaving him unsure when he will be fit enough to return to the greens.

Five-time major winner Mickelson went under the knife in October after the Safeway Open, and was planning to begin a fresh challenge for No.1 spot at 2017’s CareerBuilder Challenge on January 19-22 in Palm Desert, California.

However, that plan seems to have been dashed after Mickelson’s management company announced the Callaway golfer would be out of action for longer – though he is still expected to make a full recovery – and will be at the CareerBuilder Challenge as an ambassador for the event.

Mickelson has not won a title since winning The Open at Muirfield in 2013, but enjoyed a fine 2016, registering six top-10 finishes.

He also came close to winning The Open again this year, narrowly missing out after Henrik Stenson pipped him to the post.

Lefty played a pivotal role in helping the USA take back the Ryder Cup in the summer, winning two and a half points at Hazeltine, halving his singles match with Sergio Garcia on the final day after another memorable tussle.

It is hoped that Mickelson is not side lined for too long, as his presence on the golf course is sorely missed right now.
