Henrik Stenson named Golfer of the Year

Henrik Stenson

Henrik Stenson has been named the European Tour's Golfer of the Year for 2016. The decision is unsurprising, and highly deserved.

Stenson, 40, won his maiden major title at the Open Championship in July, before landing the Race to Dubai title shortly thereafter.

The Swedish maestro also picked up the BMW International Open in June, and was just beaten to a gold medal at the Rio Olympics by winner Justin Rose.

"To win the claret jug, a silver medal at the Olympics, the Race to Dubai and now this means 2016 was a very special year for me, and I'm proud of what I achieved," said Stenson.

"You can argue that my consistency was a touch higher in 2013, but in 2016 I produced my best performances at key moments, so it will go down as the best year I have had and this award is a very nice way to end it."

Masters champion Danny Willett and four-time winner Alex Noren were also considered for the award, while Dustin Johnson was recently named PGA Tour Player of the Year.
