Golf club drama for Mickelson at Valero Texas Open


That 12th hole at the Valero Texas Open was a pest for players all through the week – but perhaps none more so than Phil Mickelson.

Jimmy Walker, who eventually won the event, had to dig with his bare hands to find his golf ball in the fairway bunker during the third round three. But it was five-time winner Mickelson who takes the prize after experiencing a very unusual happening.

After changing his mind about which golf club to pull from his bag, Lefty was then troubled by an awkward stance with the ball beneath his feet.

Often cited as one of the best sand escape players in the game, it seemed a pretty straightforward shot for Mickelson, but he was left with a bemused look on his face when the club head nearly flew as far as the ball after making contact with the sand.

“What the heck?” was the initial reaction and the look on Mickelson’s face said it all afterwards.

He went straight into his bag and pulled out his mobile phone to request a replacement.
