World number 2, Ariya Jutanugarn leads first women’s golf event for 116 years

Ariya Jutanugarn leads with a six-under-par 65 opening round in the first women’s Olympic golf event since 1900.

The British Open Champion, from Thailand, is only one shot ahead of Inbee Park of South Korea, who is also a seven-time Major winner.

The World number one, Lydia Ko of New Zealand, carded a 69. Team GB’s Charley Hull was three shots off the lead whilst team mate, Catriona Matthew is level par.

“I played well but feel like I left so many shots out there on the back nine," said Hull. "But I feel like I am hitting it pretty well and at the end of the day I'm pretty happy with that score.”

Unlike the men’s top golf players being absent, nine of the World’s top 10 female players are competing at Rio.

The second day of play is likely to be thrilling. Park has not played competitively for two months following a thumb injury which meant she was unable to defend her British Open title last month. It was during this absence that Jutanugarn won the title and her first Major at Wentworth Park.

However, Jutanugarn has continued her fantastic form at Rio 2016 by carding seven birdies and an eagle.
