Vijay Singh will skip 2016 summer Olympic Games in Rio

Vijay Singh is the latest name to withdraw from golf’s Olympic return in Rio de Janeiro this summer, citing a variety of reasons for his decision.

Singh is a PGA Tour veteran and his decision will be seen as pretty big news. However, the player has given several different reasons for skipping the landmark event – from a cluttered schedule to the Zika virus.

Originally Singh was happy to be part of the Olympics, but things have changed for the native Fijian.

“The timing of it, you know I have to focus over here [on the Tour],” Singh told “I would like to play the Olympics, but the Zika virus, you know and all that…”

It hasn’t been smooth sailing for the 53-year-old recently after struggling this season. He missed the cut in half of his 10 starts, including The Masters.

Golf is returning to the Olympic program for the first time since 1904. Many golfers have been vocal about their intentions of playing the even and representing their country, while some are still expected to opt out.

Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain, currently listed as an alternate for his country's team, recently withdrew from consideration.
