Rory McIlroy scoops Association of Golf Writers' trophy for third time

Rory McIlroy is now only the third person to scoop the Association of Golf Writers’ trophy on three separate occasions after also receiving the award in 2012 and 2014.

The 26-year-old joins Steve Ballesteros and Lee Westwood in the elite group of athletes who’ve impressed enough to given the accolade on several occasions.

McIlroy won in a narrow race which saw him just edge out Britain and Ireland’s Walker Cup team, who pulled off a record 16.5-9.5 triumph over the United States' leading amateurs at Royal Lytham and St Annes in September.

Third place went to England’s Andy Sullivan following a breakthrough campaign on the European Tour.

McIlroy has already been named European Tour Golfer of the Year earlier in the week, so this is the icing on the cake for a player who’s endured a mixed year on the greens, which culminated in him being victorious in his defence of the Race to Dubai title.

Speaking to Sky Sports, McIlroy said: "When you think of the contributions that Seve and Lee made to European golf over the years, I am delighted to be linked with them at such an early age, and clearly I'm hoping to do enough to win the AGW trophy in future years as well.

"Winning in Dubai again meant a huge amount to me and enabled me to look at the year as a whole in a different light. It has also given me that bit of momentum going into next season.

"I'd also like to congratulate our Walker Cup team on their stunning success. It must have been a very difficult decision for the golf writers."
