Poulter out for four months with foot injury

Ian Poulter’s chances of being part of Europe’s Ryder Cup team has taken a huge blow after the Englishman pulled out of all upcoming events due to a foot injury.

The 40-year-old has been key to Europe’s recent successes over the USA team, winning 12 points from his previous five appearances.

The belief is that Poulter has been suffering from an arthritic joint injury that seems likely to keep him out of action for the next four months.

If the timescale stated proves accurate, it would be a hefty blow to his chances of making it to this year’s competition – which gets underway on September 27 at Hazeltine Golf Club in Minnesota.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Poulter said: "I am obviously disappointed to be in this situation, especially during a Ryder Cup year.

"Right now, rest and rehab take priority in me returning to full strength later this season. I look forward to resuming a full schedule as soon as I am able."

Poulter's doctor Ara Suppiah added: "We feel that the best option at this stage is to take some time off to allow complete recovery and rehabilitation of his foot.

"This will give him the best chance of returning to the game sooner and preventing further deterioration of the affected joint."
