Poulter gets into rules disagreement with official at PGA Championship

When Ian Poulter ventured onto the par-4 eighth during the final round of the US PGA Championship, he probably wasn’t expecting to get into a rules disagreement with an official over a lost golf ball.

After Poulter sent his drive high and true into trees ringed with red hazard stakes, he and playing partner Jordan Spieth began the search to find the Englishman’s golf ball.

From the players watching on the tee and what video replay showed, it looked as if the golf ball went into the hazard--but they couldn't find it in the five minutes allocated to players searching for a lost golf ball.

The rules official told Poulter that, because he didn't find the golf ball in the hazard, he had to play it as a lost ball and go back to the tee instead of dropping near the hazard line.

This didn’t sit well with Poulter, however, who said: "If it's here, we would see it. You got to be kidding me. You absolutely got to be kidding me."

Eventually Poulter convinced the rules official that the golf ball was in the hazard and played it as a lateral water hazard based on the evidence.

An official appeared to find Poulter's golf ball after the five-minute limit, but it's unclear exactly where it was recovered.

Poulter made a bogey on the hole.
