Mickelson defeats Ko in skills challenge

Phil Mickelson and Lydia Ko locked horns alongside two other female golfers in a much-hyped short-game competition, with the five-time major champion taking victory.

Mickelson, known for having an enviable short-game, lined up against Ko, Brooke Henderson and Stacy Lewis on Monday at Olympia Fields in Illinois ahead of this week’s Women’s PGA Championship.

Lefty proved he hasn’t lost his touch by winning the skills challenge, which included a couple of different chipping contests and a knockout game involving images of each plyer behind plates of glass.

"I was nervous because I know how good they are," said Mickelson. "And it was fun because it gave me an opportunity to be around some of the best players in the world, best athletes in the world."

Ko is grouped with Lexi Thompson and Inbee Park for the opening round of the second women's major of the year on Thursday.

She has recently fallen to No.3 in the World Rankings, behind So Yeon Ryu and Ariya Jutanugarn.

Ko came up just short of the PGA title last year when she lost to Henderson on the first playoff hole to miss out on her third straight major title.
