Rory McIlroy hits back at “bored” comments made by fellow golfer

Rory McIlroy has hit back at those criticising his performances on the golf course following his failure make the cut at this year’s US Open for the second consecutive year.

The World No.2 posted rounds of 78 and 71 at Erin Hills, but his green time was ended rather quickly as his attempts to win a fifth major ebbed away amid a lack of due in part to an injury-ravaged season.

There was a lot of negative attention thrown McIlroy’s way, most notably from fellow professional Steve Elkington. The Australian didn’t hold back on social media, claiming McIlroy is no longer interested in competing, and that money is now his only motivation.

“Rory is so bored playing golf … without Tiger the threshold is probably four majors with 100mill in the bank,” Elkington posted to Twitter.

However, still hurting from that early exit, the criticism didn’t sit well with McIlroy, who responded with: “More like 200mil… not bad for a ‘bored’ 28 year old…plenty more where that came from”, before listing his various achievements on the golf course.

Elkington couldn’t help but get the last word in, though, citing how another top player never boasted about their wallet size despite winning 18 majors in their career.

This looks like a feud which could burn for some time.
