Day wins exciting play-off at Torrey Pines

Jason Day won a tense four-way play-off to claim victory in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines on Sunday.

Day shared the lead with JB Holmes, Harris English and Scott Stallings on nine under par at the end of the fourth round.

Stallings and English were both unable to unlock any advantage in the play-off and were eliminated on the first hole, leaving Day to capitalise on a mistake from Holmes to seal the win.

The victory sees 27-year-old Australian Day move up to fourth in the World Rankings.

Holmes and English had started the final day in a share of the lead but played too defensively as their rounds ended in a tie of par 72. Holmes in particular played an overly cautious game, highlighted when he chose to lay it up on the par-five 18th.

The conservative nature of Holmes’ play allowed Day and Stallings to gain purchase with rounds of 70 and 69 respectively, with Stallings making a fabulous eagle on the par-five 13th. And for a while Day was clinging onto his position by his fingertips – keeping his 70 only barely after over-hitting a chip on the 18th which appeared to be heading for the water before stopping thankfully short.

Stallings and English quickly hit trouble when the play-off got under way on the 18th hole, with Stallings leaving himself woefully short while English found rough on the left of the green.

Holmes and Day ended their opponents afternoon shortly thereafter with a birdie each, but on the par-three 16th Holmes over-hit his tee shot beyond the green and wound up with a bogey – giving Day a two-putt for the win.
