Billy Horschel wins £7million FedEx Cup

Billy Horschel enjoyed a staggering payday as he captured the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta to bag that £7million jackpot.

The American closed his account with a 68 for a three-shot victory in the PGA Tour’s season-ending tournament, along with a first prize of £880,000, the overall FedEx title and a whopping £6.2million bonus.

Jim Furyk was tied for the lead with three to play, and had he not faltered at the finish, could have been in contention for the victory. However, he finished with a share of second place with a below-par Rory McIlroy, who had begun the day tied with Horschel.

A key moment in the final day came at the 16th hole when Horschel appeared set to fall back into a tie with the impressive Furyk – before powering away and sinking a 31-foot putt for par.

Furyk knew his chances had gone with a bogey at 17 following a poor approach, which allowed Horschel some priceless breathing space and a three-putt at the last.

A lovely tee-shot into the heart of the green before a two-putt handed Horschel a monster cheque and another title.

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy was left to rue some terrible mistakes in a forgettable run at the event which was sparked by a double bogey at the sixth after his shot flew into water. From there the world No.1 managed a bogey at 9, 10 and 11 to drop right away before rallying back with birdies at 15, 16 and 17.

McIlroy later blamed his double-bogey on the sixth on a tired swing, explaining to Sky Sports 4: "I was making bad swings at the wrong time and getting punished for them.

"When Billy was making bogey on 10 I thought I had a decent chance and then I three-putt there for the second day in a row and I felt like any chance I had to win the golf tournament went."

When asked about how he was feeling about his season overall, McIlroy said: “To win two majors, my first WGC event and give it a real good run in these FedEx events, I'm really proud of myself the way I hung in there and dug deep the last few weeks.

"When I look back on the year as a whole it's been my best year to date so I can't complain."
