Zach Johnson Takes Final President’s Cup Place
Zach Johnson secured the 10th and final place in the United States President’s Cup team with a scintillating finish at the Deutsche Bank Championship.
The 2007 Masters champion holed a 26-foot birdie putt for a share of 29th place in Boston. The 37-year-old’s birdie pushed Webb Simpson from 9th to 11th in the US list.
The two captains’ picks for the Ryder Cup-style event, to be held against an international team at Muirfield Village in Ohio, is set to be announced on Wednesday.
Fred Couples is the captain of the US team, with former Open champion Nick Price leading the international team, which will comprise the rest of the world, minus Europe.
Currently it’s the American’s who hold the trophy, which was first staged in 1994, after they won the four editions of the Ryder Cup-style competition. Their most recent win was a 19-15 victory in Melbourne in November 2011.
