Watch: Notorious ‘coffin bunker’ gives McIlroy nightmares during Open preparations

Short par-3’s can be notoriously difficult to master, but perhaps none more so than the 123-yard eighth hole at Royal Troon, site of this week's British Open.

Officially named The Postage Stamp, it is the shortest hole in the Open rotation and offers up a very different experience for all golfers – from Ernie Els’ ace in 2004 through to the below video of McIlroy learning the hard way why some nickname it the ‘coffin bunker.’

The bunker itself is relatively deep but offers very little in the way of room to successfully pull of a good swing of the golf club, making hitting golf balls difficult.

And when McIlroy stepped up to give the bunker a try, it took a whopping six shots before he was finally able to free his golf ball – with nine on the hole.

With sustained winds of 15-20 mph expected for the opening two rounds, there's a very good chance golfer’s might make that score during the tournament.
