US Win Back Walker Cup

The hopes harboured by Great Britain and Ireland of retaining the Walker Cup were dashed last night in Southampton, New York, as the United States wrapped up victory to reclaim the crown.

Starting the final day 8-4 ahead, the Americans went into the singles 10-6 up after the morning foursomes were shared, with the visitor’s Gavin Moynihan and Kevin Phelan edging out Patrick Rodgers and Jordan Niebrugge in the last match to give Europe a slender margin of hope.

In the end, however, it wasn’t to be, and with the US needing just three-and-a-half points from the 10 singles matches, they clinched victory when Nathan Smith defeated Nathan Kimsey in match five.
