US Open 2017: Adam Scott misses his putt from less than a foot out

Adam Scott got off to the worst possible start to his 2017 US Open campaign with one of the worst putt misses seen for quite some time.

The 36-year-old has never won the US Open, but his record in this competition is excellent, having finished in the top 20 four of the past five years.

Fans of the Australian will point his previous outings at the event, in which he always seems to stutter before finding his feet. However, Erin Hills does not forgive poor play, and Scott suffered at the first hole of his round with a terrible missed putt from a foot out.

He went onto bogey the third, the fourth and the eighth but got a shot back at the ninth to card a three-over-par 39 on the front nine.

There was some hope late on for Scott, who managed to claw his way back into contention and seven off leader Rickie Fowler, but admitted nerves got the better of him. He also refused to take credit for his late upturn in form, instead praising caddie Steve Williams for some crucial advice.

"He said, 'you have to show how much you want to win.' Steve challenged me to shoot four under in those last four holes," said Scott.

"It was a really good finish; for a time it looked like I was playing out of the tournament.

"I had a wobbly start; too many nerves and voices in my head on the front nine. But now I'm back in it."
