Two golfers lose clubs on same flight while traveling to British Open

Having your bags go missing after a flight is one of the biggest headaches one can experience, but what if that “missing” bag also contained your entire career? That’s what happened to not one but two golfers after they boarded a Spanish airline to travel to the British Open this week.

Tasmanian Ryan McCarthy and American Julian Suri each took to social media to vent about the poor customer service they received after Vueling Airlines lost their golf clubs before the year’s third major.

"Absolutely livid Vueling airlines lost my golf clubs on a 3 hour direct flight from Rome on the way to The Open. Then to be told they are in Barcelona and might arrive Tuesday night if I could just be patient. You're kidding me!" a rightly distraught McCarthy wrote.

Suri, whose golf clubs were also stranded in Barcelona, wrote: "Ridiculous that after 48 hours I can't get a call back from @vueling about my golf clubs."

Of the two golfers, McCarthy is the luckier after his manufacturer Titleist managed to make a new set and express ship them out to him. He will use these clubs until the original set eventually reaches him.

Speaking to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, McCarthy sounded optimistic despite the mess-up. "It happens once every three to four weeks,” he explained. “It's just part of traveling. I'll take the new set out today and hopefully they arrive tonight."

The blame seems to be aimed at a broken baggage door on the flight out of Rome.

Suri and McCarthy were traveling to the Open from Sardinia, Italy, where they competed in the European Challenge Tour's Italian Challenge Open last week.

Another player, Charlie Ford, also played in the Italian Challenge Open, and posted on Twitter yesterday that Vueling had lost his golf clubs as well. "This is beyond a joke now @vueling No golf clubs on a direct flight & now not answering a phone call about them!" he wrote.

Not a good day for traveling golfers, their luggage, or the airline!
