NFL quarterback Tony Romo falls short of qualifying for US Open

Former NFL Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was unsuccessful in his bid to qualify for the US Open golf championship after losing out in Texas on Monday.

Romo produced a three-over-par 75 at Split Rail Links & Golf Club, and was not one of the seven qualifiers who finished two-under or better to advance to the sectional from a field of 115 hopefuls.

The 37-year-old was one over after an eagle at the 14th, but found water off his tee shot on the next, before suffering a triple-bogey that put paid to his chances.

Three bogeys on the front nine followed, which left him three-over at the turn. Romo followed with a birdie at No. 10, but bogeyed No 11, before closing his account by making a six-foot birdie putt on the 18th.

The Texas Golf Association has estimated a gallery of about 200 fans turning out to watch their local hero, who played quarterback for 12 NFL seasons, and passed for 34,183 yards and 248 touchdowns.

This isn’t the first time that Romo has tried to qualify for the US Open, entering the fray in 2008, 2010 and 2011. In 2010, he made it to sectional qualifying, before having to withdraw to participate in organised team activities with the Cowboys.

The 2017 US Open will be played June 15-18 at Erin Hills in Erin, Wisconsin.
