Tom Watson takes on the Ice Bucket Challenge
US Ryder Cup team captain Tom Watson has joined a growing number of athletes as he took on the Ice Bucket Challenge – later nominating the entire US Ryder Cup team to follow suit.
The Ice Bucket Challenge is the latest viral trend to be picked up, and is designed to raise awareness and money for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig’s disease.
As far as the #icebucketchallenge goes, a person is nominated to dump a bucket load of ice water over their head and then challenge someone else to do the same – or donate to the ALS Association within 24 hours.
Watson tweeted the following message after successfully taking on the challenge: #ALSicebucketchallenge I nominate the entire@rydercupusateam Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler, Jim Furyk, Jimmy Walker, Phil Mickelson, Matt Kuchar, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed, Zach Johnson and my 3 captain's picks! Please visit www.packardcenter.org and www.bruceedwardsfoundation.org.
The ALS said the challenge has raised over $15 million in the last month, compared to $1.8 million during the same period last year.
PGA.com was quick to share Watson’s Facebook video, in which he nominates his whole Ryder Cup team to step up and accept the challenge. And some players, like Cobra Golf’s Rickie Fowler, have already taken the popular brain-freezing plunge.
For Watson, however, the challenge is more than just about getting some laughs and setting his team up for a cold shower. His long-time caddie and good friend Bruce Edwards lost his battle to ALS in 2004, so the challenge holds special meaning to the American.
So now we wait to see which of US team will buckle under the pressure to complete the Ice Bucket Challenge…especially seeing as Tiger Woods gave it a go, even though he’s not going to be playing in the Ryder Cup this year.
You can see Tom Watson take on the Ice Bucket Challenge on his official Facebook page. In the meantime, why not watch Rickie Fowler, Lexi Thompson, Michelle Wie, Keegan Bradley and others as they each attempt the Ice Bucket Challenge in the name of charity!
