Three-time major winner Billy Casper dies aged 83

The golfing world is in mourning following the sad news of Billy Casper passing away at the age of 83. The three-time major winner and former US Ryder Cup captain’s passing was confirmed by the US PGA Tour and comes on the heels of Charlie Sifford’s death last week.

In a glittering career, Casper won the US Open in 1959 and 1966, as well as the Masters in 1970. He also claimed 51 PGA Tour titles between 1956 and 1975.

The PGA Tour said Casper suffered a heart attack and died at his home in Springview, Utah, on Saturday.

Jack Nicklaus was both a rival and a friend to Casper, and spoke about his “underrated” compatriot.

"Those who did compete against him knew how special he was," said Nicklaus, 75.

“When I looked up at a leaderboard, I wasn't just looking to see where a Palmer or a Player or a Trevino was. I was also checking to see where Billy Casper was."

And Gary Player also paid tribute to his former rival, saying: "I played a lot with Billy, and I always thought Billy had a wonderful short game.

"He was always a thorough gentleman."

Casper was inducted into the World Hall of Fame in 1978 and currently sits seventh on the PGA Tour’s all-time victories list.

Everyone at OnlineGolf would like to extend their deepest condolences to Casper’s family and friends in what is surely a very difficult time for all who knew the great man.
