Rory McIlroy withdraws from Bridgestone Invitational

World No.1 Rory McIlroy will not be defending his Bridgestone Invitational title next week as his recovery from an ankle injury rolls on.

Though not greatly surprising, the news will be a blow ahead of the year’s final major, the US PGA, at Whistling Straits in just over two weeks’ time – which is looking increasingly likely to be McIlroy-less.

McIlroy did offer a brief statement yesterday, which said: "Unfortunately, I will not be defending my World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational title.

"Best of luck to all the competitors and I look forward to returning to Firestone in 2016."

The 26-year-old ruptured the anterior talofibular ligament in his left ankle during a kickabout with friends in July 4 and medical experts predict his rehabilitation period to be approximately three months.

Most suggest that the earliest anyone will see the Northern Irishman again playing a competitive round to be in October or November.

The final major of the calendar year is due to take place on August 13-16, with American hotshot Jordan Spieth hunting his third major of the year after capturing both the Masters and US Open in quick succession.

And Spieth has wasted no time in forcing his way into the record books, working hard in McIlroy’s absence to win the John Deere Classic and finsihing a whisker away from winning the Open Championship in St Andrews two weeks ago.

It is also widely expected that Spieth will have replaced McIlroy as World No.1 by the time the US PGA kicks into gear.
