Rory McIlroy named Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Month
Rory McIlroy has been named Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Month... it’s starting to feel a lot like déjà vu around here; almost like we’ve written this article before. Ah, that’s right. We have. THREE TIMES in the past four months! But once again it’s hard to argue Rory McIlroy being given the award following his scintillating victory at the US PGA Championship, so the Northern Irishman deserves praise for his achievements.
The win in Valhalla capped what has been a remarkable summer for the golfing ace, hot on the heels of his second major success at the 143rd Open Championship at Royal Liverpool.
McIlroy was once again pleased to win the award which he scooped in May and July respectively, telling Sky Sports: "It’s always an honour to win the Golfer of the Month award. The award is important to me, and to have won it three times this year shows I’m having a really special season.
“But hopefully I’m not done yet – there’s still plenty of golf to be played, so it’d be great to add a fourth before the season is over.”
Other golfers were considered for the award, including Jamie Donaldson’s Czech Masters triumph, Scotland’s Marc Warren in his Made in Denmark heroics and South Africa’s Hennie Otto when he played the Italian Open. However, in the end, the judging panel just couldn’t look past the outstanding work that McIlroy has put in this season.
Derek Lawrenson, chairman of the Association of Golf Writers, said: “It was another glorious month, in which Bradley Dredge emerged from the wilderness in spectacular style, Jamie Donaldson clinched his Ryder Cup place in grand manner and Stephen Gallacher played so well in Italy that he presented an unanswerable case for a wild card for Gleneagles.
“But The Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Month is rapidly becoming the golfer of every month – another Major, another victory for the unstoppable Rory McIlroy to make this a straightforward decision once more.”
