Rickie Fowler breathes life back into faltering Olympics after committing to Rio Games

With so many high-profile golfers opting to give this summer’s Rio Olympics a wide berth, Team USA has been buoyed by the news Rickie Fowler is fully committed to playing a part in the Games.

The World No.7 confirmed the news via Twitter on Sunday in a message to his followers. His decision bucks a worrying trend which has seen a glut of golfers pull out of the big event – many of them ranked in the world’s top 20.

World No.2 Dustin Johnson pulled the plug on his Olympic inclusion two days ago following the withdrawals of Australia’s Jason Day and Adam Scott, Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama.

However, Fowler has made his intensions crystal clear by tweeting: "Looking forward to wearing some red white and blue in Rio."

And there’s further good news for the USA team as Bubba Watson has also confirmed his participation in the Rio Olympics.

World No 3 Jordan Spieth is still yet to commit, with the deadline for American golfers to confirm to the US Olympic Committee looming on Monday.

Golf's return to the Games after a 112-year absence has lost some sheen with the high-profile withdrawals, with many of the game's top stars citing concerns over the mosquito-born Zika virus that has been linked to birth defects.
