Olympic golf course overrun with wildlife

It looks like golfers at the Rio Olympics will be sharing the greens with some furry pals after a siege of wildlife has taken to strolling around the brand new golf course.

However, unlike crocodiles and snakes, Brazil’s large rodent population are completely harmless – even if they look a little unique.

The creature (pictured) appears to be the result of coupling between a wild pig and some kind of rat, but the Capybara, which can weigh in at a hundred-plus pounds, has the great honour of being the world’s largest rodent. And its also a vegan.

So unless the golfers are strutting around the fairways and bunkers with lettuce hanging out their trousers, they should be perfectly safe.

"They chew down on the grass at night," Mark Johnson, director of international agronomy for the PGA Tour, told the National Post.

"There are about 30-40 of them inside the course perimeter, but they live here and we play golf here, we co-exist."

Garcia owls (no relation to Sergio) have also taken up residence in some of the sand bunkers due to the course being set-up next to a nature reserve – a move which environmentalists vehemently protested against ahead of construction.

"The players won’t be too upset," said Johnson about the small holes the owls burrow into the sand. "They’ll just get a free drop."
