Mickelson confident Tiger will be back on top

They might be rivals on the greens but Phil Mickelson is confident that Tiger Woods will regain his form and have “the last laugh” after a shambolic showing in Phoenix.

Woods failed to gain purchase in his game and did not make the cut at last week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open after recording his worst ever score as a professional (82) in the second round at TPC Scottsdale.

On several occasions his short game abandoned him, with his usually razor sharp short-iron chips either falling short or landing beyond the target. It led to a plethora of bogeys in Arizona which was so far removed from Tiger’s usual haul that it was almost shocking.

It is now seven years since the 39-year-old last won a major and a few pundits have questioned whether the Florida resident will ever add to his tally of 14. However, Mickelson is convinced that Tiger will be back – with a roar and a bite.

"I think that Tiger's going to have the last laugh," he said. "I think that his short game, historically, is one of the best of all time. I think his golf game is probably the best of all the time.

"The short game, when you haven't played, it's the first thing to feel uncomfortable and the quickest thing to get back. I don't think he's going to have any problems, I really don't."
