McIlroy hints at return with new training video

Could a Rory McIlroy return be on the cards in the very near future?

The Northern Irishman heightened speculation surrounding his comeback after posting a video in which he’s working out in the gym without showing any discomfort from his injured ankle.

McIlroy has been absent from the golf course since suffering a “total rupture” of ligaments in his left ankle during a game football with friends on July 4; an injury severe enough to rule him out of the Scottish Open as well as forcing him to miss vital trophy defences at both The Open and WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

McIlroy has not yet disclosed whether he will be fit enough to defend his US PGA Championship next week, and on Tuesday his publicist denied reports he had scheduled a practice round at Whistling Straits for Saturday.

However, McIlroy posted a video on his Instagram account which sees him balancing on his left leg while twisting and throwing a gym ball to mimic the actions of the golf swing.

Alongside the short video clip, McIlroy wrote: “Working hard every day to come back stronger #dontmindthe-grind.”

McIlroy’s injury had certainly come at a cost as he had been replaced at World No.1 by American Jordan Spieth – with the 22-year-old capturing the Masters and US Open championships in his absence.

Many will want McIlroy to return to action soon so the world can enjoy his and Spieth’s sporting rivalry in all its glory.
