Matt Fitzpatrick Wins US Amateur Title
Matt Fitzpatrick has become the first ever Englishman to win the US Amateur Championship title since 1911 after he swept aside Australia’s Oliver Goss.
The 18-year-old led for the majority of the 36-hole play-off at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. He had already earned an exemption into the 2014 Open by reaching the final, so long as he remains an amateur golfer.
Fitzpatrick also gets a place at next year’s Open Royal Liverpool and a likely invite to the Masters at Augusta.
The Sheffield-based player, who also won the Silver Medal as top amateur at this Open at Muirfield, had his 14-year-old brother Alex helping out as his caddie. They make a good team.
