Lee-Anne Pace is first female golfer to withdraw from Olympics

The first high-profile female golfer has joined the growing list of male counterparts in withdrawing from this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio amid fears of Zika virus.

Lee-Anne Pace is a ten-time title winner but has made the difficult decision not to include herself in the South Africa team for Brazil after monitoring the Zika virus situation, which has forced many players to draw away from the event.

She is said to have researched the pros and cons of going to the Games but in the end has chosen not to risk her future health citing family must come before her profession.

The LPGA says it has accepted her decision and reiterated that every player makes their own call whether or not to participate in any given tournament no matter its stature. It went on to stress that it respects and honours all its members’ decisions.

Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, Adam Scott, Graeme McDowell and a host of other top players have all so far withdrawn from the Rio Olympics for a variety of reasons.
