Ian Poulter to be awarded top PGA award

Despite having to endure a season of injury setbacks, Ian Poulter can find solace in the fact he will be honoured for his services to golf by the PGA.

The 40-year-old will be among some of golf’s greatest players and personalities, such as Sir Nick Faldo, Colin Montgomerie, Seve Ballesteros and Darren Clarke – to whom Poulter will partner at this year’s Ryder Cup as Europe Vice Captain. The reward is for his outstanding contribution to golf, and the award will be given to the Englishman at the PGA’s annual fundraising lunch.

Poulter qualified as a PGA professional back in the 1990’s before quickly establishing himself as one of the most exciting – and often polarising – players in the sport. “We are absolutely thrilled that Ian will be the guest of honour at the PGA lunch and receive this award,” said PGA chief executive Sandy Jones. “Ian’s is a truly inspirational story that shows that if you combine talent and determination, you can achieve your dreams.

“He has excelled on the world stage and nowhere more so than through his Ryder Cup feats which are on a par with anything we have seen in the history of the matches. No-one will ever forget his performance on Saturday afternoon in the 2012 Ryder Cup which played such a huge part in the Miracle at Medinah.”

Poulter has not hit a golf ball in competitive play since the Dean & Deluca Invitational in may following a problem with an arthritic joint in his foot. The injury was severe enough to rule him out of the US Open, British Open, US PGA Championship and Ryder Cup.
