Ryan Giggs disqualified for not paying £5 entry fee

Former footballer Ryan Giggs is worth an estimated £40million, yet found himself disqualified from a local golf event for failing to cough up a small entry fee at Worsley Golf club.

He was the talk of the 19th hole at the Worsley Golf Club's latest Men's Captain Qualifier 2 tournament when it was discovered he had been DQ’d from the 145-man event for not paying the £5 entry fee.

Every participant was supposed to put in a fiver cash before hitting the greens the day before the event, but Giggs did not bother to do so and went on his way to play alongside his pals.

However, when the results were published on the Worsley Golf Club website, Giggs – who plays off a 14 handicap – was ranked 144th with a ‘DQ’ by his name with a message reading ‘No comp fee paid.’

"It caused a bit of a giggle in the clubhouse," said one of the competitors.

"Ryan’s got a few bob in the bank so it has made us laugh. He’s a popular lad around the club but rules are rules.

“Anyone entering the contest is meant to pay a fiver in cash in the club shop. I'm sure it was just a mistake, but he played on anyway with his pal.

"It put a smile on people's faces seeing him at the bottom of the leaderboard and I'm sure he'll see the funny side of it."

Worsley Golf Club has since sent out emails to its members saying, "Can we please remind all members that to enter any competition you need to pay the required amount in cash the day before.

"We have been informed that this is becoming a regular issue with a number of members not having enough cash with them.”
