Darren Clarke named Europe's Ryder Cup captain for 2016

Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke has been unveiled as Europe’s Ryder Cup captain for the 2016 tournament at Hazeltine, USA, it has been announced.

A five-man panel had been set up to choose the new captain, and the 46-year-old was unanimously selected over Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez and Thomas Bjorn of Denmark.

Clark was a strong favourite for the job and has four previous Ryder Cup victories under his belt as a player, while he was vice-captain for the wins in 2010 and 2012, so he’s hardly a novice in this area.

Clarke succeeds Irishman Paul McGinley – the man who led Europe to a five-point victory over the USA at Gleneagles in 2014 – so he’ll have some big shoes to fill.

Meanwhile Davis Love is widely reported to be offered a return to the captaincy role for the USA following Tom Watson’s ill-fated efforts in Scotland.

Love’s side had been poised for victory at 10-6 ahead at Medinah before that famous comeback from Europe put him and his team to the sword.
