McDowell Equals Course Record in Hawaii
10th Jan, 2011
Northern
Irish golf legend Graeme McDowell narrowly missed out on the chance for a place in the play-off in the Tournament of Champions, Hawaii after finished on an impressive
23 under par with a brand new set of golf clubs. McDowell moved to Srixon
products during the off season and his choice seemed to pay off almost immediately. McDowell took
a while to get to grips with his new clubs, finishing his first round 2
under par on 71 and following with two rounds of 68. McDowell then struck a
chord with his new Srixon ZTX irons, Cleveland CG15 irons and the new Srixon
Z-Star XV golf balls, equalling the course record in Hawaii of 62, 11 under par in the final round.
Having
won the US. Open last year, been a Ryder Cup hero, forced German golfer Martin
Kaymer all the way in the race to Dubai and risen to 6th in the
world (now 5th), the pressure was on McDowell to prove his decision
to change equipment was a shrewd move, something the Northern Irish golfer
feels he has done. "I’ve just
proven to the world I’m not naive enough to
switch to inferior equipment"
said McDowell, adding “I’m just over the
moon with the way I played this week, Srixon are making some fantastic
equipment. The Z-Star XV ball is amazing and my new ZTX irons are beautiful”
The
event in Hawaii was won by American golfer Jonathan Byrd, who eventually beat
fellow American golfer Robert Garrigus after a second play-off hole. The pair
both finished the tournament one shot clear on 24 under, beating an impressive
collection of golfers including Ian Poulter, Steve Stricker and Justin Rose.
