Golf Putters

Golf Putters

When you consider that the average golfer will use their putter for about 40% of strokes then you will realise how crucial it is to get this purchase right. The old adage of stick with a putter you like no matter what has some truth to it, but with the massive amount of technology available in modern putters, you really will be missing out if you don't investigate. When selecting a putter spend as much time (and money) as you would a driver as you will be using it around 3 times more!

Choosing the Right Putter

The key considerations of a putter are head shape, face, shaft type and shaft length. There are a variety of weird and wonderful head shapes and it is just a question of finding one that suits. Beginners may prefer a heavier type mallet head to help them obtain a good strike, particularly on short putts. Also some of the newer (and stranger) head types are designed to increase the Moment of Inertia of the club. This means that the club face has more stability and resistance to twisting, thus ensuring a more accurate putt.

Putter Face Inserts

The face insert varies from polymers to milled metals. They are designed to give a truer roll to the ball and to offer the golfer feedback. The type of material selected is down to personal choice, but the modern faces do a fine job of getting the ball rolling forward in such a way that it is more likely to hold its line.

Shaft types are important as offset shafts can help you to square the club face easier and ensure straighter putts. The shaft length should also be carefully considered. The standard measurement is 35 inches, yet many tour professionals use 34 or even 33 inch shafts, so it is wise to experiment with different lengths to see what you are most comfortable with.
