Byrd was introduced to golf at the age of three along with his brother by his father Jim Byrd who sadly passed away from brain cancer last year.

Byrd's older brother Jordon who is an assistant golf coach has been known to caddy for Jeff times including the 2008 US Mid-Amateur and occasions on the PGA Tour.

College team mates of Byrd's at Clemson where his brother now coaches include Glover, Warren and Trahan.
