Golf Balls
There is a huge range of golf balls on the market and the good news is that there are hardly any bad ones. However it’s important to choose the right golf ball for your game to ensure optimum performance on the golf course and to ensure you don’t spend too much or too little cash.
Low Handicap
At this level your consideration should be control and performance on and around the greens. Distance won’t be a factor ordinarily. A premium golf ball costing around £30-£40 per dozen is a must. Great examples can be found from Titleist, Srixon, Nike Golf, TaylorMade, Callaway Golf and Bridgestone.
At the top end some manufacturers produce two slightly different types of the same golf ball with one being slightly firmer off the club face with more distance and slightly less spin. If you prefer this type of feel or need a little extra distance then look for these versions sometimes having an X or a D at the end of the name.
Medium Handicap
As your game improves to mid handicap level, then depending on the type of game you have there are a few considerations. If you feel that you do still need distance off the tee then its fine to go with a golf ball which is primarily about distance. However look for “mid tier” golf balls which give long distance with a softer feel around the greens. For these golf balls look to spend around £18-£25 per dozen and good examples can be found from Srixon, Titleist, Nike Golf, TaylorMade and Callaway Golf.
If you feel that your distance off the tee is fine then look at premium golf balls which are designed to give more control and maximum spin off irons shots as well as feel nice around and on the green. These golf balls perform really well in terms on consistency. Top golf balls will cost around £30-£40 per dozen and good examples can be found from Titleist, Srixon, Nike Golf, TaylorMade, Callaway Golf and Bridgestone.
High Handicap
As a higher handicapper, your primary concern is normally one of distance. If you can launch the golf ball further from the tee then this will make it easier to hit the green on long Par 3 holes and make your second shot shorter and easier on the others. Also golf balls which spin less tend to fly straighter as there will be less unwanted side spin on shots.
Look for a good distance golf ball and at this level it’s not really necessary to spend more than £20 per dozen and often much less will be fine. Excellent examples can be found from Srixon, Nike Golf, TaylorMade, Titleist, Wilson Staff and Callaway Golf.
